Far 3 significantly slower

Post by unodgs »

Hi!
I really love Far, but the latest version is significantly slower than version 2. Especially on folder changing. I have two fars running side by side (similar plugins, same window size and same font). In Far2 changing folder is almost instantly,in Far3 I can feel meaningful difference. It is better visible if I keep holding enter. The difference is visible on my home desktop (win7 32b, 2GB Ram, athlon 64 x2 1800Mhz) and laptop (core duo p8600 2.4 Ghz, win7 64b, 4 GB ram). Only in my office (quad core intel, 8Gb ram) far3 is working fast. Does anyone of you experience the same?

To perform clear measurements, you have to run both FAR2 and FAR3 without any plugins and macros, set exactly the same panel modes and do exactly the same actions. To avoid performance effects of file system caching, you have to run each FAR version after rebooting the system (definitely, with heavy background applications disabled). Please post what exactly you've done (how many times has the directory been changed, how many files is there, what are panel modes, etc) and the timings.

When you enter directory, far stores its name in history.
v2 stores the history in the windows registry, v3 stores it in the sqlite database, which can work a bit slower, especially when combined with slow storage devices such as flash drives or with some poorly coded anti-virus software.

Try to disable folder history in options/system settings to be sure.

Can these operations be queued in the background to avoid users' waiting for their completion?

OMG. Does that mean Far constantly rapes my precious SSD? This really-really-really suxx. Can I see how much times it writes to disk and to which sectors? Can I have a delayed write or "write on exit" or only store folder history in memory. Turning it off completely is not an option.

Ask your operating system about it.
It is theirs (OS and SSD) personal business.

I suggest you try ReadOnlyConfig=1 in Far.exe.ini It's so fast.

IF far is really significantly slower, it will be great to have an option to choose properties storage type: sqlite, registry, file...

It's me again. Running far without macros did not help. Nothing changed. No matter what directory I enter in (full of files or with only a few) Far3 is always slower than Far2. But I tried this ReadOnlyConfig=1 (thanks Kirillony!) and that helped. What a noticeable difference! Now Far3 speed is the same as Far2. But am I loosing something by settings this flag on?

all configuration databases opened in-memory so,
all your setting changes will take effect only in current session,
when your close far it will be lost.

Hi all,
I love Far3, but I agree, that saving history to the database can be done by asynchronous/backround way.
On my computer with SSD it is unusable slooooow, when enabled.
If I disable it in options, Far3 is much more faster (as Far2).

Continue with your great job.
Cheers, Jan

I just upgraded to latest nightly build and yes it's better. One q, the history is still saved in db?
