External programs won't start

Post by hoffenfar »

Since build 3258 (not sure, though), files won't get started by their associated external programs (setting "Use windows registered types"). After hitting <Enter>, the filename appears on the command line, but nothing happens. Tested for *.pdf, *.jpg, *.htm and others. Calling far with /P won't help.

What's the output of “echo %COMSPEC%”?

At this moment, I'm not sitting at my pc at home, but I'm pretty sure that's the same there:

Code: Select all

d:\Home\Hoffmann>echo %comspec%
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

Now, at home. From within FAR,

Code: Select all

echo %comspec%
shows nothing.

So, it's the reason why FAR cannot start external programs. You need to fix %COMSPEC%.

Typing "set" from far command line shows the environment table, and comspec is there. But typing echo %comspec% gives nothing. With build 3249, everything works fine. But you are right, there must be some special condition at my home pc, since I'v upgraded right now here at work to 3258, and everything still works ok. So, it's not far manager..-) Sorry for filing a bug report to soon.

echo %path% won't work, either. Can someone tell a possible reason, why those envvars won't show up with echo? All the envvars are present in my system and all other programs work...

At work, where everything works, AutoRun is empty.

At home, the key isn't different. This couldn't be the cause for the trouble...

So create it manually in advanced system settings.

The key is there, but the value is empty. On both PCs. On one, it works, on tbe other not.
Just created a new installation, from archiv without any plugins and modifications, on the faulty PC. With this new installation, I don't see the problem.
So the problem is likely somewhere within my far installation, not within the OS.

Just found the reason. Some rules in my pctools firewall (which I have, like FAR, for years) are blocking some activities from far without ever displaying a message, so I didn't ever notice this change in behaviour. After allowing the actions again, FAR works fine. Thanks all for your kind support.
