7z takes over rar files

Post by AlanHK »

Far 2.0.1420 on XP

I opened a RAR archive in one screen and tried to copy a folder into it.
I get this error: "No such interface supported"

Also the "Copy" dialogue has Copy to "7-ZIP:"
(See screenshot.)

I recently installed 7-ZipFar.dll, so that must be the problem.

far7z.reg that came with the dll has:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Far\Plugins\MultiArc\RAR]
"Extract"="7z x -r0 -y {-w%%W} -scsDOS -- %%A @%%LQMN"
"ExtractWithoutPath"="7z e -r0 -y {-w%%W} -scsDOS -- %%A @%%LQMN"
"Test"="7z t -r0 -scsDOS -- %%A @%%LQMN"
"AllFilesMask"="*"
I removed the branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Far\Plugins\MultiArc
(which has all 7z commands)
In Far I used "Plugins configuration/7-Zip" and turned off "Plugin is used by default".
But I still get the same "7-Zip: dialogue when I try to add files to a rar archive.

So, how do I undo this and restore rar to handle rar files?
Or have I fucked this up beyond repair and have to reinstall the whole thing?

You have 2 different archive plugins installed: Multiarc and arclite.
To solve Rar conflict: press AltShiftF9, choose "arclite", check "Disable archive formats: [x] Active", add Rar to the textbox below

Alternatively you are always able to feed some file to Multiarc using commandline prefix ma, e.g.:
ma:"somefile.rar"

In addition to what John Doe suggests, you'll also need to ensure that [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Far\Plugins\MultiArc\RAR] uses rar.exe at least to create/update archives.

Oh, I see this is 7-zip, not arclite.
So to solve your issue you need to delete 7-ZipFar.dll (or complete folder).

P.S.
If you need 7-zip you better use arclite (included in standard distribution of FAR manager)

I don't have "Arclite" plugin in my config. I assume that is in Far 3. I'm using Far 2.

Anyway, if I upgrade to Far 3, I assume it can handle 7z with this and I don't need a 3rd party plugin.

I see your "Far 2" is really ancient (last builds had arclite included)

But you still need to download Multiarc separately in order to create/update Rar archives.

Updating a program I use all day long is traumatic, so I don't do it unless there is an obvious advantage.

So I guess I'll gird my loins and try Far 3.

Updating to last Far 2 build should not be painful.
Far 3 is another story, many things changed there, really.

P.S.
Rar is commercial software maintained by Eugen Roshal
Far manager is free and open source, now maintained by completely another people - Far Group.

It seems logical that everyone can build free Far without any commercial piece of software. IMO

That sounds like a warning...
It took me a while to go from 1.7 to 2.

I thought the rar format was open, and there are free tools to use it?
I didn't know they' made such a complete separation.
It was like getting served tea at Starbucks.
