Far 3.0.4400 and broken plugins

Postby przemoc » Sat 11 Jul, 2015 15:24

Renewal (3.18.7.4040) showed me lately, that there are some updates, so I rerun Far (x86) in admin mode (it is annoying that I have to do it, renewal itself should start updating consoles with admin rights, but I'm digressing now) and updated it to latest stable build 4400. So far I noticed problems with 2 plugins, but maybe there are more.

FileCopyEx3 hangs after buffering (reading) some [bigger?] files, just before real copying (writing) starts. Doesn't matter whether target is local drive or remote (SMB share). No problems with built-in Far copy (albeit its tad slowness, of course).

ImageView shows image only for a split-second (enough to load and show file) and immediately closes the view.

Were there were some bigger API changes that plugin developers have to accommodate for?

You can upgrade ImageViewer manually -- 3.46.3

I am not sure that you can find stable enough version FilecopyEx...
And [imho]
(1)it is not really faster than plain far copy,
(2)you have a big chance to lose your data if you use it.

Thanks, 2useven10! Image Viewer you linked above works fine in b4400.

So far (in previous stable Far builds) I had no problems with FileCopyEx3.

The difference can be huge, but it depends on the use case. I'll give you one example. W/o FileCopyEx3 I copy files to my Sandisk Extreme UHS-I microSD card at ~18 MB/s (which is very inefficient), w/ FileCopyEx3 - ~32 MB/s. So it's great timesaver. And it's not a slow disk I copy from, it's Samsung 840 Pro, so reading (buffering) within FileCopyEx3 is done immediately. (Rest of hardware is rather decent too.)

Can you test far copy speed to your micro-sd card with following far settings:
[ ] Use system copy routine
far:config System.CopyBufferSize = 262144
?

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know about far:config. I've performed some tests (repeatedly).

Code: Select all

      Computer: ThinkPad T430 (2344-56G)
            OS: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit
           Far: 3.0 b4400 x86 (unless stated otherwise)

  non-SSD disk: HGST HTS725050A7E630 (~466GB)
SSD disk: Samsung 840 Pro (~119GB)
USB3 SLC flash: Mach Xtreme ES SLC (~30GB)
uSD card: Sandisk Extreme UHS-I (~59,5GB)

FileCopyEx3 (15% of mem) -  ~11s
FileCopyEx3 (4096K)      -   ~8s (b4242)
FileCopyEx3 (1024K)      -  ~10s (b4242)

copy file 752 MB from SSD disk to uSD card

FileCopyEx3 (4096K)      -  ~28s (b4242)
FileCopyEx3 (1024K)      -  ~30s (b4242)

copy file 1573 MB from SSD disk to USB3 SLC flash

FileCopyEx3 (4096K)      -  ~10s (b4242)
FileCopyEx3 (1024K)      -  ~11s (b4242)

copy file 5944 MB from USB3 SLC flash to SSD disk

system copy routine      -  ~40s
far copy routine (4K)    -  ~86s
far copy routine (16K)   -  ~38s
far copy routine (32K)   -  ~38s
far copy routine (256K)  -  ~39s
far copy routine (1024K) -  ~40s
far copy routine (4096K) -  ~42s
FileCopyEx3 (15% of mem) -  ~41s (b4242)
FileCopyEx3 (4096K)      -  ~41s (b4242)
FileCopyEx3 (1024K)      -  ~42s (b4242)

Far copy routine with System.CopyBufferSize set to 1MB seems like an acceptable compromise for now, outperforming FileCopyEx3 in most cases.
