Entering DOC, XLS etc. as if they were archives

Post by smok »

Hi,

I have used Far (1.x) for years and recently I installed 2.0 alpha build 760 x86. I also use 7-Zip plugin (4.64) and I have the following problem, which did not appear before: when I press Enter on a DOC file (trying to open it in Word), Far opens it in a panel instead. Although it is useful for archives, I'm not necessarily interested in having it for all document types. What is the reason of such behaviour?

Shift+Enter opens the file properly in Word, but I want my standard Enter-opening back...

Thanks for some suggestions.

You can assign a file association, or use 7-zip alternative plugin

Thanks, file association helped - I just never needed it before because Far could use my standard Windows assignments. It's always nice to set it in one place (Windows registered file types) rather than two. Was there any change or it's just my installation causing this behaviour?

What did you mean by "7-zip alternative plugin"? I'm using 7-zip now.

Anyway, I have just found that setting command as "!.!" (with quotation marks to preserve paths with spaces) is all I need to use Windows assignments. With mask holding multiple extensions (in my case "*.doc,*.mpp,*.ppt,*.xls") it does the trick very well without too much configuration.

you can use the smart launch plugin (sl: prefix) to launch the doc files (use !\!.! for full path and !/!-! if there are problems with certain characters) without flickering and assign alternate enter to 7zip.

for example like this:

Same problem, and I solved with smartlaunch plugin. But is has a big problem: can't use the filenames with special characters, like my hungarian letters: éáűőúöüóí. Do u have any solution?

Code: Select all

Almost. The last line is: "Press F1 to help" and an OK button. The rest is same.
I have SmartLaunch 0.4.

XLS association?

Post by AlanHK »

I've just upgraded to Far 2.

In 1.7, pressing "Enter" on an xls file opened Excel.
Now it shows a "Compound" view that lists 3 pseudo files:
"Document Summary Information", etc. Though these actually don't have any readable information; the screen shows a line of question marks.
Where does this come from? Can it be turned off?
I know I can create a new association for .xls, but it would be simpler if I could just remove this useless "Compound" association and then the normal Windows association should take action.

Do you use 7-Zip plugin? Try 7-Zip Alternative: http://code.google.com/p/7zipalt/ , it can ignore files by mask.
Also, Shift+Enter always opens the Windows association of the selected file.

Could anyone explain why needs .doc file a mask in associations and .pdf not?
