Find files and folders without pressing Alt key

Post by senpost »

Like windows explorer, I would like to search/goto files/folders without typing Alt key. Any help is appreciated.

Windows explorer does not have a command line. Far Manager does. Direct typing means typing in the command line. What you propose seems to be against the design. 'Alt' is a quite convenient gate to the search mode. Any other tool will only provide another way to enter some "search mode". IMHO.

Roman thanks for the reply. Literally windows explorer doesn't have command line, but it has address bar. Most of the time I use FAR to navigate files and folders, occasionally I go to command line. So I feel "Alt" is an extra keystroke. Any macros to bring Alt search bar if I start typing any alphabet/number/symbols, I can start typing in command line by disabling this macro/enabling another macro.

Let's see what the others suggest.

On the second thought, it might be useful if Far Manager allows switching of the command line ON and OFF and enables auto-search-on-typing mode depending on the command line visibility.

+1. Is there an enhancement request for it?

selection bar

Post by masterg »

Hi,

can you please tell me how to move the selection when i'm typing to the file i typed.
The idea is that now everything i type it goes to the console.
i want to go the panel and move to the file or folder i'm typing.

Sorry for this dummy question but i looked in help and i cannot see anything.

Thank you,
Andrei

how to do quick search with letters only

Post by roti »

Hi,

Is it possible to have quick search in Far Manager by using keys only? By quick search I mean the functionality that is used by typing with "Alt" key, and which allows you to quickly find a file or folder by typing its name.

Thanks,

Hmm, is it at least possible through macros? I would appreciate any hints on how to write such macros.

Thanks,

You might be able to achieve what you wish by creating a bunch of macros, one for each key/character, binding Alt+key to just key, e.g: press Ctrl+., Alt+A, Ctrl+., bind to A.

However, you would lose the ability to use command line. This is exactly why FAR does not have an option to quick-search files without Alt. If you don’t need command line, you probably won’t be comfortable with FAR.

You mean I need to create one macro for each key (which would be about 80-90 macros) ??

I don't want to loose the console, but it should not be active by default.

Thanks. Is it open source? Do you have it somewhere in an open source repository?
