Different colors in Windows 10 when you run Far.exe directly

Post by ganchev » Mon 17 Dec, 2018 14:28

I have problems with Far 3 colors in Windows 10.
When I start it by running the shortcut from the Start Menu the colors look normal:
Win10_Shortcut_Colors.png
However when I run Far.exe directly, the colors look very different (much brighter):
Win10_Exe_Colors.png
I tried all possible properties of the window (Font/Layout/Colors) but couldn't fix this.
I use AutoHotkey and I have a hotkey to run Far, but now I need to point it to the .lnk file to get normal UI.

I was able to reproduce this on multiple systems, including cleanly installed Windows 10 VM.

Windows 10 x64 Version 1803
Far Manager v3.0 build 5300

permanent: colortool.exe -b cmd-legacy

Thanks, this works!

To save the temporary one (colortool.exe cmd-legacy) you just need to open the Properties dialog and click OK.
This way it will only affect Far and will not change the defaults.

Thanks a lot!

A little note: binaries "Color Tool April 2019" haven't worked for me (error "Could not find or load "cmd-legacy"").
BUT "Color Tool October 2018" did the job.

colortool.exe cmd-legacy.ini
works fine.
From ct help: "The name of a color scheme. ct will try to first load it as an .ini file color scheme If that fails, it will look for it as a .json file color scheme If that fails, it will look for it as an .itermcolors file color scheme."
So read forum but not app's help :)
