Plugin for Unicode file names (e.g. Kanji double width characters) in file panels

Post by LigH »

Hi there.

I remember that I found a plugin for displaying Unicode characters in file panels which are unusual in Roman languages, e.g. double width Kanji symbols. Also I remember there was an additional trick in the Far Manager display options to avoid occasional fluttering of column borders, some kind of width awareness option. Can you help me finding both again?

You don't need any plug-in to display double-width Unicode characters anywhere in FAR3.
The options you ask for are Interface settings > [x] Use Virtual Terminal for rendering, [x] Fullwidth-aware rendering

Unfortunately, some characters still appear as unprintable [?]

This looks like a font issue.

I tried it with Consolas, Lucida Console, and DejaVu Sans Mono as monospaced fonts for the Far manager window. Same for all, placeholder character. Installing Arial Unicode MS did not help.

This is a PC with Windows 10. The other one where it worked before used Windows 10 too; a pity I don't have access to that one right now. Maybe I need to force UTF-8 on all console windows? Windows 10 may have CP 1252 as default.

PS: No, UTF-8 consoles don't change it. Maybe it is a remnant of a very old Far installation being updated over years.

This is in fact a workaround for pretty old conhost.
The better idea would be just try in Windows Terminal.

Thank you. Yes, this was the one I found years ago. I remember now.

The Windows Console Host is the only one available in my Windows 10. Here I may have to install the Windows Terminal manually (github releases).

Some people may dislike that the Windows Terminal layout is not so configurable as used from Console Host options.

Just collecting useful links for possible future readers of this thread.
